My Brother Dallin served a mission in Peru. My parents went there 2 yrs ago to pick him up from his mission. my mom fell in love with the people there. She became friends with some of them and they keep in contact. She went there a yr ago, and she is there right now.
My heart goes out to the people there. They have so little, and they don't have the small things we take for granite. They live in little shacks with dirt or cement floors, they don't have toilets or running water. They don't have much of any thing actually. They don't even eat every day. When they do eat, they don't eat much.
People in Peru or 3rd world countries, their governments don't take care of them, like our government does for our people. They don't get health care, or welfare, food stamps, wic, shelters, soup kitchens, and what not. They don't get anything. They can work 12 hour days cleaning strawberries and get very little pay. It's so sad. We need to be very thankful for being born in this country. Here are 2 letters my mom sent us from Peru.
Hi everyone, I am typing on a spanish keyboard, and it is different than what i am use to, so most of the time i wónt use capital letters. i don´t understand how all the keys work.there is so much that i want to tell you about. first of all i want to say that i love you all. thanks bill and those of my family that are still at home, for allowing me this time to be here. i am having the time of my life. i really do love it here. i will always remember dallin´s last letter to me, when i was preparing to pick him up with bill, he said Mom, you are going to love peru. he knows me. and he was right. i think everyone should have the experience of visiting a getting to people in a 3rd world country.when i arrived in lima, my friend lesby her mom, and their bishop was at the airport to meet me. the bishop was the person to drive us to the place we were staying in lima. the place we stayed is where lesby´s sister lives. at the top of a 3 story building of sleeping quarters and make shift kitchens. the two families on our floor shared a bathroom as did all the families,on the different floors. there was no shower, so we bathed using a bucket of cold water and standing in a cement shower basin. i always tell me self, i can do this for a week, the people here live this way for a life time. while in lima, lesby her mom and i went to the temple together. before leaving for the temple, lesby offered a prayer which i thought was a great idea to begin our time in the temple. we took 3 buses and over an hour to get to the temple. it was really nice to be there with them.then we went further out to visit a young family that lesby´s family has taken into their hearts as their own. he is a young man who was abandoned as an infant and is now married with 2 little kids. wow, i though lesby´s family was poor....but not compared to this family. the house is made out of something not much more than cardboard. it was sad. there were only two rooms. it wouldn´t surprise me if they went outside to go to the bathroom. one room was the size of an average bedroom, which they spent their time in during the day, and then another room with all two beds in it. one for the parents and one for the 2 kids. come to find out, lesby has been going there to help the mom clean and take care of the kids for free, because the mom works 12 a day monday through saturday cleaning strawberries. when we left that family lesby said, laurita, you told me you have some clothes for my family, would it be ok, if we give some to this family tooWow of course i told her. i have been at lesby´s house these last couple days. i realized today that when i eat breakfast, which consists of warm milk with brown sugar in it, and sometimes a piece of toast, not all the family eats with me. the kids always do though. when i ask lesby about it, she confided in me, and said it was because they did not have enough food for everyone. i told her that i have money to buy food for them. she said, no laurita, because i know you will need your mom this week for taxis and busses and to buy food for yourself. wow, i can´t believe it. they have soooo little, but just the other day she was asking me if i would mind if they gave some of the clothes to the other family. this makes me feel uncomfortable, but when the kids eat fruit or something extra like that, the little kids, no older than 6 years old, thank me for the money that buys the food. when i gave them the clothes that was donated by lindsey and her friend in her ward, the 6 year old boy had a big smile just to recieve a shirt. and with every shirt, he kept smiling bigger and bigger. they all loved the clothes soo much. they all oooed and wowwwed over them and thanked me so much. i told them they were from other people. in the one bedroom house that lesby lives in, there are 3 beds, one queen and 2 twin size. there were 4 adults and 3 kids sleeping in there. their dad slept out on the couch.i love it here. i love the people. they wait on me, like i´m a queen. i try to do back for them, but it is hard, they won´t let me, plus it is not my house. i don´t know what to do, or exactly how things are done in their house.it is summer here and it is very humid. i have had sweet in the back of my hair. but that´s ok. it´s all worth it. i love you all so much, i will be home one week from today, on friday. take carei love you, mom, laura
Hello everyone. The last time I wrote, I was in a hurry and did not tell of some of the detail that I would have liked to. The custom here, is to give those who enter your home, something to eat or drink. Remember the little family that lived in a small 2 room house made out of particle board (almost like cardboard) Well...while visiting there, the wife pulled out a package of saltine crackers and spread butter on them to give us. She is a very good and humble person. While in Lima, I slept the one night there in my friend lesby´s sister´s place. When I sat down on the bed, wow, I could feel the wooden slats under the foam rubber mattress. When I laid down to sleep, oh by the way, it was a twin size, and both Lesby´s mom and I slept on that bed, while lesby slept on the cement floor with only blanket under her for padding. Well, when I laid down to sleep, I had to adjust my body either up higher or down lower to see where the wood slats felt the best on my back. My first day in Lesby´s house, I was preparing to take a sponge bath, using a bucket of cold water. I asked lesby´s mom, Vicky, if she had a towel I could borrow. She looked embarrassed and said no. I felt embarrassed for asking for one. The she gave me her bathrobe to dry off with. The first time I helped her do the dishes by hand, I was rinsing them and putting them into a dish strainer on the sink. I asked her if she had a small towel I could use to dry the dishes, she said no. There are so many things that cost us very little, but this family can not afford them.Oh, I watched Lesby us a spoon from the kitchen to use to curl her eyelashes. I never saw that before! It worked though. And for eyeliner, they use a q tip and put a little mascara on it. I think I already told you how the faces of the kids lit up when they recieved the clothes I brought for them. And I was happy to see how willing the little 6 year old girl was, to set aside clothes for the poor child living in a shack in Lima. Today is Lesby´s birthday. She is 29. I gave her a camera for her birthday, last week, the first day I was here, so that she could take pictures of us together. Yesterday we went to church. She took her camera because she wanted to get a picture of me with her bishop. But then after getting there, decided not to. She later told me, it was because she did not want the peope there to think she was showing off, or bragging. Last night, Vicky told me something in spanish that I did not understand. I asked Lesbý to tell me what she said. Lesby told me, ¨Laurita, remember when I did not want to use my camera in the church because I did not want the people to think I was showing off, and bragging?¨I said, yes. Then she told me what her mom said, that she has been taking me to all her relatives and friends houses, because she WANTS to show me off. She wants them to know me. Wow, I can not believe how humble they are and how good and loving. There is a little 6 year old grandson that lives in the same house as Vicky. The other day their next door neighbor locked her keys in the house, and asked the 6 year old boy to please climb over the fence and open her back door to let her inside. He did and whe he came back to lesby´s house, he said, ¨mama, the lady wanted to give me a piece of fruit to say thanks. I told her no thank you, because I did it for love.¨I am so impressed with the way this family has raised the kids to give and to serve. This is the family that struggles to have enough food for themselves.I woke up in the middle of the night at about 3:30, and heard what sounded like a sweeping noise outside my window, I looked out the window and saw a man using a STRAW broom, to sweep the streets by hand. It is his job. And I am not kidding, it looked as good and clean as if a city truck was sweeping and cleaning it. Life here is very hard. They don´t have the conviniences that we do. I am loving my time here. Lesby and her mom are so spiritual. I like that they gathered everyone together to have family prayer just before going to church. The same way we did just before going to the temple. They don´t have closets like we do, in their one bedroom house. They each have their own, large cardboad box that they keep their clothes in. I love all of you. I am thankful for your love and for my family allowing me this time here.I will see you all soon.Mom\Laura
